Termessos:
The ruins of
Termessos are found at approx. 1.000 meters high on the
mountains of Antalya. Even Alexander the Large, in 334
B.C. could not overcome the walls of Termessos to
take the city. The story is that Alexander the
Large, to revenge this,deforested
entire olive groves
around Termessos. In the 3th Century A.C.
the inhabitants left the settlement because of an earthquake. Only in the
year 1840 Termessos was rediscovered. As
it is hidden away,
the visitor finds Termessos today as an overgrown jungle. The well
extended road network of the city is to be seen. The well preserved
remains of a theater in the classical Greek style and the walls of an
Odeons are very impressive.. The seats of the theater were beaten
directly out of that one rock.
History has it that an earthquake in the 3th Century A.C.
destroyed graves of the 'Deadcity"
and devastated it, after which it was plundered by
robbers. One can observe many of the threatened animal and plant
species in the nature park of
Termossos. Bears and panthers can supposedly
be found here as well.
