Perge:
Once united with the sea through the river Kestros. The first settlement
arose for approx. 1.000 B.C. on the Acropolis hill. Today one sees still
the remains of a byzantine church here. In the 7th Century B.C. fell Perge
in Lydics, later into Persian hand. 133 B.C. Perge fell on the Romans. In
morning-Christian time the apostles Paulus and Barnabas preached here.
Directly at the street you see the remains of the theater, that approx.
100 B.C. was built. In 40 rows of seats it offered 14.000 visitors place.
Also the remains of the main street with columns built by the Romans are
very impressive. Wide in the north hits one onto the ruins of an ancient
sport place in which then up to 27.000 spectators found place.
